“Experience tranquility at the beautiful floating scripture hall and the historical meditation courtyard where Luang Pu Sao and Luang Pu Man once resided. Pay respects to the statues of these revered Vipassanā meditation masters amidst the lush natural surroundings on the banks of the Mekong River.”

Wat Ko Kaeo Amphawan, historically known among locals as "Wat Om Kaeo," is a prominent riverside temple located in That Phanom District. It holds immense significance in the history of Isaan Buddhism, particularly within the forest tradition (Kammaṭṭhāna). The temple gained its spiritual renown as the residence of the two greatest masters of the Thai Forest Tradition, Luang Pu Sao Kantasilo and Luang Pu Mun Bhuridatto, who stayed and practiced meditation here between 1930 and 1932. Their presence turned this site into a pivotal hub for the propagation of Dhamma in the Mekong region.

A defining historical moment occurred during their stay when Luang Pu Sao and Luang Pu Mun noticed that the Great Phra That Phanom was in a state of severe neglect, heavily overgrown with vines and forest vegetation. Distressed by its condition, the two masters led their disciples and local villagers in a massive effort to clear the surroundings and restore the dignity of the sacred stupa. This act of devotion rekindled the faith of the local community and eventually paved the way for the major restoration led by Phra Khru Wirojratanobon in the following years.

The temple’s architecture is characterized by its serene simplicity, harmonizing perfectly with the lush natural environment. The centerpiece is the "Octagonal Scripture Hall", a magnificent wooden structure elevated over a large pond. Its intricate wood carvings demonstrate local craftsmanship while serving as a place of quiet reflection. Furthermore, the "Dhamma Courtyard" marks the exact area where the great masters once practiced, now housing life-sized statues of Luang Pu Sao and Luang Pu Mun for pilgrims to pay their respects. Surrounded by ancient trees and the refreshing breeze from the Mekong River, Wat Ko Kaeo Amphawan remains a vital sanctuary for meditation and a living monument to the pioneers of the Thai Forest Tradition.
