“The magnificent white Phra Borom That Chedi Kalyaniwattana, a Lanna-style pagoda, enshrines nine relics of the Buddha, bestowed by the Supreme Patriarch. It sits atop the historical site of the Sri Kotraboon Kingdom on the banks of the Mekong River, offering a serene and peaceful atmosphere ideal for meditation and spiritual practice.”

Don Nang Hong Temple is a historically significant temple located in That Phanom District, situated on land believed to be the ancient site of the Sri Kotrabun Kingdom. Established around 1757, this temple serves as a spiritual anchor for the local community and preserves the rich heritage of the Mekong River civilization. The site is steeped in local legends and archaeological importance, reflecting a long history that spans centuries of faith and tradition in Nakhon Phanom province.

The hallmark of the temple is the Phra Borommathat Chedi Kalayanivattana, a magnificent bell-shaped stupa influenced by Sri Lankan architecture. Standing 32 meters tall, the stupa is finished in brilliant white with exquisite gold accents. It is highly revered due to its direct connection to the Thai Royal Family; Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana presided over the foundation stone-laying ceremony on November 20, 2001. The stupa is officially permitted to bear her royal initials "KW" on its pediment. Furthermore, the pinnacle of the chedi enshrines nine sacred relics of Lord Buddha, graciously bestowed by the late Supreme Patriarch of Thailand.

The surrounding area of the stupa is adorned with intricate stucco artworks, including majestic Naga sculptures that symbolize protection and abundance. The temple’s location near a tributary leading to the Mekong River provides a serene and tranquil atmosphere, ideal for meditation and cultural study. Today, Wat Don Nang Hong stands as a testament to the enduring link between the history of ancient kingdoms, the reverence for the monarchy, and the profound Buddhist faith of the people in the Northeast of Thailand.

How to Get There
  • From Nakhon Phanom city, take Highway 212 (Chayangkoon Road) towards the That Phanom district for approximately 40-45 kilometers. Upon reaching Don Nang Hong subdistrict, look for the sign for the temple entrance on the left (about 10 kilometers from Phra That Phanom).

Travel Tips
  • It is best to arrive at the temple in the morning or late afternoon to capture the beautiful, soft natural light illuminating the pure white pagoda, resulting in the most stunning photographs.

  • Respectful attire is required when entering the temple grounds and around the pagoda. Women should wear skirts or long trousers that cover their knees as a sign of respect for the sacred site.

  • Visiting during a Buddhist holiday will offer the opportunity to witness local ceremonies and merit-making rituals, a long-standing tradition of Nakhon Phanom, which are simple and impressive.

  • It is advisable to plan a trip to the nearby Wat Marukhanakhon to see the pagodas representing birthdays and experience the history of the Sri Kotraboon Kingdom in a single day.
