“A historic Chinese-style shrine housing a sacred city pillar, serving as a spiritual center for locals and the community along the canal.”
San Chao Pho Lak Mueang Nakhon Chai Si, also known as San Chao Pho Lak Mueang Bang Kaeo, is a sacred site of great spiritual importance to the people of Nakhon Chai Si.
Local legend tells of a sacred log that once sank in Bang Kaeo Canal (Tha Tamnak Canal). Villagers dreamt of a divine message instructing them to retrieve the log and enshrine it as the city pillar. They collaborated to recover it and build a shrine over it for veneration.
The original shrine was small and simple but was later rebuilt into a stable and elegant structure through the devotion of local benefactors and Chinese residents. The design reflects traditional Chinese temple architecture (Chinese-style pavilion), representing the community’s cultural identity.
Inside the shrine are:
-
The sacred city pillar (the recovered log)
-
Chao Pho Lak Mueang, or Chao Pho Wichian Chot
-
Guan Yin (Kuan Yin) statue brought from Wat Klang Bang Kaeo
The shrine is a spiritual center for both locals and the Thai-Chinese community. People visit to pray for stability, prosperity in business and work, and protection from dangers.
The shrine also hosts an annual festival, “Thingtan” (Si Gow), held around August 14–16 each year. This important local tradition features elaborate ceremonies and cultural performances.
