“Sip fresh coffee amidst panoramic valley and misty views, experience the unique Akha way of life, and enjoy a serene, cool atmosphere perfect for relaxation.”
Pha Mee Village, located in the highlands of Wiang Phang Kham Subdistrict, Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province, is a community of Akha hill tribe people living in harmony with nature on a mountain range near the Thai-Myanmar border. The surrounding area consists of complex mountains and lush forests, resulting in a cool climate almost year-round. During the winter, temperatures drop significantly, often leading to the phenomenon of morning mist.
Originally, Pha Mee Village was an Akha village where people subsisted on high-altitude agriculture, cultivating field crops and local plants. However, it has since developed into a community-based tourism destination, seamlessly integrating traditional lifestyles with tourism. A key turning point was the promotion of high-quality Arabica coffee cultivation, well-suited to the high-altitude climate. Coffee has become the main cash crop for the community today, and has also led to the establishment of numerous coffee shops nestled along the mountainside.
Tourists visiting Pha Mee Village will experience a simple village atmosphere. Most houses are a blend of traditional and modernized styles to accommodate tourists. Homestays are scattered throughout the area, allowing visitors to stay overnight and experience the Akha way of life firsthand, as well as learn about their culture, including clothing, language, and traditional customs.
One of the key features of Pha Mee Village is its breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and complex mountain ranges. Tourists can witness the sunrise in the morning with a sea of mist floating above the valleys, considered the most popular time to visit. The area is also ideal for relaxing, taking photos, and enjoying a cup of coffee amidst the tranquil nature.
Although Pha Hami Village has developed more towards tourism, the community has still preserved its original identity well. Tourism here therefore combines cultural and nature experiences. Tourists should respect the local way of life and help maintain the cleanliness and peace of the community so that the village can remain beautiful and sustainable in the long term.
