“A large earth dam reservoir with a storage capacity of 65.8 million cubic meters, surrounded by mountain landscapes and morning mist—earning the nickname “Phrae’s Pang Ung.” Visitors can enjoy scenic rafting in the middle of the reservoir, panoramic views from the dam crest sunset viewpoint, and fresh local fish markets reflecting authentic community life.”
Mae Song Reservoir is located in Ban Thor Saman, Song District, Phrae Province. It is a Royal Initiative Project of King Rama IX, constructed to solve water shortages and improve the quality of life for local residents. The project was completed in 1996 (B.E. 2539) and later developed into one of the community’s key tourist attractions.
The reservoir is a large earth dam, standing 50.25 meters high, 9 meters wide, and 730 meters long along the crest. It can store approximately 65.8 million cubic meters of water, supporting irrigation for more than 51,000 rai (about 20,000 acres) of agricultural land. It also provides water for consumption and plays an important role in flood mitigation during the rainy season. Additionally, it serves as a significant aquatic breeding source for Phrae Province.
The vast water surface is embraced by layered mountains and lush forests, creating a cool and refreshing atmosphere throughout the day. During the winter months (December–January), a layer of mist floats beautifully above the water, giving rise to its nickname “Phrae’s Pang Ung.” In the rainy season, the surrounding greenery becomes especially vibrant, making it ideal for photography and nature retreats.
One of the most popular activities is 360-degree rafting tours across the reservoir. Rafts are available for leisure trips and group gatherings. The dam crest offers a spectacular sunrise and sunset viewpoint, considered one of the most scenic spots in Song District. In the evening, villagers sell freshly caught fish such as tilapia, catfish, and Mekong giant catfish, forming a small local market that reflects the authentic riverside lifestyle.
Despite being a large reservoir, the atmosphere remains peaceful and uncrowded, making it perfect for quiet travel experiences. Visitors can enjoy picnics, jogging along the dam crest, or simply relaxing while taking in the tranquil scenery of water and mountains—truly capturing the natural charm of Phrae Province.
