“A sacred power spot featuring a 120-meter Kannon tunnel with 33 statues and built to honor workers who died constructing the historic Otaru–Jozankei road.”
Iwato Kannondo Temple is one of the most peaceful and spiritually meaningful temples in the Jozankei district of Sapporo. The temple was built in 1936 to honor the spirits of the workers who lost their lives during the construction of the major road that links Otaru and Jozankei, which was the second toll road in Japanese history. Aside from serving as a memorial site, it was also established to pray for the safety of travelers. What makes this temple especially remarkable is the Iwato Kannon Tunnel, a sacred tunnel stretching over 120 meters, lined with 33 statues of the Bodhisattva Kannon, representing the belief in “33 Kannon forms,” each associated with protection in different aspects such as love, academic success, work, or safe travel. Visitors believe this tunnel is a “Power Spot” that enhances good fortune and fulfills wishes, often described as a place where people immediately feel spiritual energy upon stepping inside.
Throughout the year, the temple is maintained carefully to preserve its traditional Japanese wooden architecture. At certain times, local festivals are held, including the annual Iwato Kannondo Festival, dedicated to honoring Kannon and praying for travel safety. The temple grounds are surrounded by large trees and nature trails, offering a tranquil, cool atmosphere ideal for meditation, peaceful walks, or cultural photography.
In autumn, the scenery becomes even more beautiful with vibrant autumn foliage surrounding the temple. With its strong historical connection to Japan’s transportation development and deep spiritual significance, Iwato Kannondo Temple is an excellent destination for those interested in history, Buddhist faith, or unique spiritual landscapes that differ from mainstream attractions in Sapporo.
