“Eight sacred ponds fed by Mt. Fuji’s naturally filtered snowmelt, renowned for extraordinary purity, spiritual legacy, and postcard-perfect views.”

Oshino Hakkai is a treasured natural and cultural landmark located between Lake Kawaguchiko and Lake Yamanakako in the Fuji Five Lakes region. Recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Mt. Fuji: Sacred Place and Source of Artistic Inspiration,” the area represents centuries of spiritual tradition, natural beauty, and geological wonder.

The ponds are formed from snowfall on Mt. Fuji that melts, filters underground through volcanic rock for 20–80 years, and then resurfaces as remarkably clear spring water. This natural filtration keeps the water at a stable temperature of approximately 13°C year-round, producing clarity so high that aquatic plants and fish can be seen clearly at the bottom. Japan officially recognizes these waters as one of the “Selected 100 Exquisite and Well-Conserved Waters.”

Historically, Oshino Hakkai served as a ritual purification site for pilgrims before ascending Mt. Fuji. The name Hakkai means “Eight Seas,” referring to the sacred eight ponds, each connected to folklore and the mythological Dragon King.

Notable ponds include Waku-ike, the most famous and centrally located near souvenir shops; Sokonashi-ike, situated inside the Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan Museum and requiring admission; and Deguchi-ike, the largest pond and a quieter spot away from crowds.

Surrounding the ponds is a beautifully preserved traditional village featuring thatched-roof houses, water wheels, small bridges, and unobstructed views of Mt. Fuji. Nearby attractions include:

  • Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan, an open-air museum displaying old farm tools, samurai weapons, and historical village architecture.

  • Shinobi no Sato (Ninja Village), a family-friendly ninja-themed park.
