“A historic onsen where water changes color seven times a day, with the unique Tsuboyu bath registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.”
Yunomine Onsen is a legendary hot spring village in Wakayama Prefecture, renowned as one of the oldest in Japan with a history dating back 1,800 years. It was once an essential purification site for pilgrims traveling along the sacred Kumano Kodo trails before visiting the grand Kumano shrines.
The most iconic feature is Tsuboyu, a small wooden bath designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where only two people can bathe at a time. What makes it extraordinary is that the water mysteriously changes color up to seven times a day, ranging from clear blue to milky white or deep green. The mineral-rich waters are believed to have therapeutic properties that soothe the body and spirit. Nearby, visitors can enjoy boiling eggs and vegetables in a 90°C hot spring, a local tradition that adds to the charm. With its blend of cultural heritage, spirituality, and wellness, Yunomine Onsen offers an authentic Japanese healing experience.
