“A line of more than 40 large rock pillars, resembling bridge supports, extending 850–900 meters along the coastline, forming a spectacular natural scene.”

Geological Features: Hashiguiiwa Rocks is a formation of over 40 massive rock pillars aligned parallel to the coast for approximately 850–900 meters. These rocks were formed about 15 million years ago from magma that intruded from underground and solidified. The remaining pillars are more resistant to sea erosion than the surrounding rock, which has been gradually worn away by waves.

Legend: The name “Hashigui” (橋杭) means “bridge pillars,” originating from a local legend. According to the story, the monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi) attempted to build a bridge from the mainland to Oshima Island in a single night. However, a demon interfered, and by dawn, the bridge was unfinished, leaving only the standing rock pillars visible in the sea. This legend explains both the name and the breathtaking scenery.

Highlights and Activities:

  • Sunrise Viewpoint: Hashiguiiwa Rocks is especially popular for photography at sunrise, when the sky’s colors reflect beautifully on the pillars.

  • Natural Monument: The rock formation is designated as a Natural Monument of Japan and forms part of the Yoshino-Kumano National Park.

  • Illumination: From late October to early November each year, the rocks are illuminated at night, creating a unique and enchanting atmosphere.
