“The temple is known for the moss-covered Mizukake Fudō statue and its location in Hozenji Yokocho, a narrow stone-paved alley lined with traditional restaurants, bars, and shops.”
Hozenji Temple (法善寺) is a small, unique Buddhist temple in the heart of Osaka, near the lively Dotonbori area. Its main attraction is the Mizukake Fudō Myō-ō statue, affectionately called Fudō-san. Visitors traditionally pour water over the statue while making wishes for good luck, business prosperity, matchmaking, or healing. Over decades, this practice has created a thick, vibrant layer of moss covering the statue.
Although the temple was almost completely destroyed during World War II, the Fudō statue survived, making it a cherished symbol of resilience and faith.
The temple is located within Hozenji Yokocho, a narrow stone-paved alley with traditional restaurants, bars, and long-established sweet shops such as Meoto Zenzai, famous for its zenzai (sweet red bean soup with mochi). The alley is especially atmospheric in the evening when paper lanterns light up, creating a warm, nostalgic ambiance.
