Mikimoto Pearl Island is a small island in Ise Bay, off the coast of Toba, Mie Prefecture, renowned as the birthplace of cultured pearls. In 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto succeeded in producing the world’s first cultured pearls here, laying the foundation for the global pearl industry. The island now operates as a popular tourist attraction offering insights into pearl cultivation and Japanese craftsmanship.

Highlights include:

• Ama Diver Demonstrations: Live demonstrations by traditional Ama divers, showing how they collect Akoya oysters by free-diving. Demonstrations occur daily at 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, 13:30, 14:30, 15:30, and 16:30 (subject to seasonal changes).

• Pearl Museum: Exhibits covering the history and cultivation of pearls, showcasing elaborate pearl jewelry such as Obidome-Yaguruma, a globe made from over 12,500 pearls, and replicas of iconic objects like the Liberty Bell and a five-storied pagoda made entirely from pearls.

• Kokichi Mikimoto Memorial Hall: Dedicated to the life and work of the founder, including a replica of his birthplace udon noodle shop.

• Pearl Plaza: Offers a wide selection of Mikimoto pearl jewelry and souvenirs for purchase.

• Scenic Views: The island provides stunning views of Ise Bay and photo opportunities of both natural landscapes and traditional architecture.

• From Toba Station (JR Sangu Line or Kintetsu Line), walk approximately 5–10 minutes across the bridge to reach the island.

• Arrive early to catch the first Ama diver demonstration.

• Allocate at least 1.5–2 hours to explore the island fully.

• Some English-language materials and staff support are available.
