Windsor Castle A Living Palace and Millennia of History

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, having been a continuous royal residence for over 900 years. It stands proudly in the heart of Windsor, Berkshire, England.

The castle was first built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, intended as a defensive fortress for London. Since then, it has been continually expanded and renovated by numerous kings and queens, making Windsor Castle a remarkable testament to the long history of the English monarchy. Notable constructions like St. George's Chapel and the State Apartments are steeped in fascinating stories and artistry.

  • The State Apartments: Open to the public, these magnificent rooms showcase the grandeur of the royal receptions, dining halls, and bedrooms, adorned with priceless treasures and world-class artworks from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Canaletto, and Gainsborough.
  • St. George's Chapel: One of the most beautiful examples of Gothic architecture in England, this chapel has hosted many significant royal ceremonies and is the final resting place for numerous monarchs, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

  • Queen Mary's Dolls' House: The largest and most exquisite doll's house in the world, built in the 1920s. It features real furniture, working electricity, and even running water, all in miniature scale.
  • The Changing of the Guard: A stately ceremony that showcases the splendor of the British monarchy, attracting many visitors. (Check schedules in advance as timings may vary.)
