“The park features two statues: a monumental Merlion and its smaller cub, which symbolize Singapore's transformation from a humble fishing village into the "Lion City."”

Merlion Park is home to the Merlion statue, one of Singapore's most prominent symbols, located on the Marina Bay waterfront. In 1964, the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board commissioned Mr. Fraser Brunner, the curator of the Van Kleef Aquarium, to design this symbol for use as its logo.

The Merlion is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, with each part holding a symbolic meaning. The lion's head comes from the ancient legend of Prince Sang Nila Utama, who discovered the island and named it "Singapura," meaning "Lion City" in Sanskrit. The fish body represents Singapore's humble beginnings as a fishing village.

There are two Merlion statues in the park: the main Merlion statue, which is 8.6 meters tall and weighs 70 tons, and the smaller Merlion Cub, which stands at 2 meters. Both statues were sculpted by Singaporean sculptor Mr. Lim Nang Seng and officially unveiled on September 15, 1972, at the mouth of the Singapore River.

In 2002, the Merlion statue was moved to its current location on the Marina Bay waterfront to make it more visible and accessible. It continues to spout water from its mouth and becomes especially enchanting in the evening when it is illuminated.

How to Get There

By MRT: The closest station is Raffles Place MRT Station (EW14/NS26). Use Exit G and walk for approximately 5-7 minutes to reach Merlion Park.

Travel Tips
  • It's best to visit in the morning or evening to avoid the heat. The evening is also when the statue is beautifully lit up.

  • This is a very popular spot for creative photos, such as posing to "catch" the water spouting from the statue's mouth.
