“A spectacular alpine valley with 72 waterfalls, iconic cliffside scenery, and storybook landscapes believed to have inspired J.R.R. Tolkien’s Rivendell.”
Lauterbrunnen is a charming alpine village located in a dramatic U-shaped glacial valley in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. Surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and cascading waterfalls, it is widely considered one of the most beautiful valleys in the Swiss Alps.
The name “Lauterbrunnen” translates to “many fountains,” referring to the valley’s remarkable 72 waterfalls, which flow down the cliffs into the valley floor throughout the year. Among the most famous waterfalls are:
- Staubbach Falls – the village’s iconic waterfall, nearly 300 meters high and one of Europe’s highest free-fall waterfalls
- Trümmelbach Falls – a powerful glacier-fed waterfall system flowing inside the mountain and accessible via tunnels and lifts
Each season offers a different experience in Lauterbrunnen.
Summer brings lush green meadows and strong flowing waterfalls.
Autumn paints the valley with golden foliage and crisp alpine air.
Winter transforms the village into a peaceful snow-covered landscape and a gateway to nearby ski resorts such as Wengen and Mürren.
Thanks to its fairytale scenery, Lauterbrunnen is widely believed to have inspired J.R.R. Tolkien when creating Rivendell in The Lord of the Rings.
