“Pom Phra Sumen stands as a symbol of Bangkok’s old city defenses, featuring traditional architecture and a peaceful park along the Chao Phraya River.”
Pom Phra Sumen, also known as Pom Phra Athit, is a historic fortress constructed during the reign of King Rama I as part of the city’s defensive system, which originally included 14 fortresses surrounding the capital to protect against invaders. Over time, most of these fortresses were demolished, leaving only Pom Phra Sumen and Pom Mahakan standing today. The name Pom Phra Sumen also inspired the naming of nearby Phra Sumen Road.
The fortress features beautiful and functional architecture, including battlements, gun ports, powder storage rooms, and various military facilities. It originally had a gate and city walls facing north, opposite Wat Bowonniwet. In 1981, the Fine Arts Department undertook a major restoration based on old photographs, reconstructing the gate in the style of a “Pratu Yot” (pointed gate) from the reign of King Rama V, which differs from the original gate built in King Rama I’s era that consisted of a red-painted wooden gate and a brick tower used as a watchtower in King Rama III’s reign.
Today, Pom Phra Sumen has been transformed into Santi Chai Prakan Park, a green and tranquil public space along the Chao Phraya River where locals and tourists can relax. The park also features the beautiful Phra Thinang Santi Chai Prakan pavilion.
