“A former royal palace with classic architecture, now home to government offices and a peaceful public park for relaxation.”
Saralrom Palace (also spelled Saranrom Palace) is a significant royal site built during the reign of King Rama IV. It was originally designed to serve as a temporary residence for members of the royal family attending state ceremonies at the nearby Grand Palace. Its close proximity to Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace made it a key part of the royal complex in Rattanakosin Island.
The architecture of Saralrom Palace reflects a unique fusion of Western neoclassical style with subtle Thai decorative elements. The buildings exhibit elegance and simplicity, characteristic of early Rattanakosin period design influenced by European styles.
During the reign of King Rama V, the palace transitioned into the first headquarters of Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, marking its importance in diplomatic history. Today, while the palace itself remains a government facility and is not open to public tours, its surrounding grounds include Saranrom Park, a beautifully maintained public garden.
Saranrom Park was once part of the palace gardens and now serves as a serene retreat in the heart of old Bangkok. With mature trees, walking paths, and shaded seating areas, it is an ideal spot for locals and tourists to relax after visiting nearby historical landmarks like the Grand Palace, the National Museum, and the Rattanakosin Exhibition Hall.
