“Twenty-nine historical pillars, stunning Sino-Portuguese architecture, giant leatherback turtle sculptures, and a cultural learning center marking the grand entrance to Phuket Island for all road travelers.”

Phuket Gateway is located in Ban Tha Chatchai, in the northern part of Phuket Island, near the Sarasin Bridge, which connects the mainland to the island. This area is considered the "first gateway" most tourists encounter when arriving in Phuket by car. Therefore, it has been developed into a symbolic landmark reflecting the province's history, culture, and natural resources. The design aims to provide visitors with a first step into Phuket's culture before entering the city or its various coastal attractions.

The most striking element of the area is a series of 29 stone pillars arranged in a symbolic manner, resembling a ceremonial courtyard or walkway. Each pillar represents a "Significant Event" in Phuket's history, inscribed with information related to different periods. These include the era when Phuket was a center of tin mining, attracting Chinese laborers and traders, leading to a distinct cultural blend and the unique identity of the local community; and the period when Phuket was influenced by Western culture, particularly in architecture and trade, reflected in the Sino-Portuguese buildings still found in Phuket Old Town today.

In addition to conveying historical narratives, the design also emphasizes the province's unique natural resources, especially the "Leatherback Turtle", a rare marine animal that used to lay eggs on Mai Khao Beach in the past. Therefore, a large leatherback turtle sculpture with simulated eggs was created as a symbol of abundance and environmental conservation. This element not only enhances visual appeal but also serves as a medium to communicate the importance of marine resource conservation to visitors.

The area surrounding the Phuket City Gate is designed to be open, airy, and versatile, serving as a rest stop for travelers, a landmark photo spot, and an area for learning about the province. Although there are buildings constructed to house information and cultural exhibitions, their opening hours may not be consistent. However, the exterior area remains accessible at all times, ensuring its continued function as a rest stop and welcoming point for tourists.

In the context of tourism, the Phuket City Gate is not just a photo spot or check-in point, but also functions as a “space for interpreting Phuket’s identity” through architectural elements and symbolic arrangements. Tourists who take the time to examine the details on the stone pillars can understand the development of Phuket from the past to the present in economic, social, and cultural dimensions. This makes the place valuable as a starting point for an educational journey combined with recreational tourism.
