“A 19th-century Chinese fishing village on stilts with stunning seaside views and heritage charm.”
Chew Jetty is one of Penang’s most famous clan jetties, established in the 19th century by Chinese Hokkien immigrants from Fujian, China. Built on wooden stilts extending over the water, this heritage site is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of George Town. The community retains its traditional lifestyle, making it a fascinating place for cultural exploration.
Visitors can stroll along the wooden boardwalk lined with rustic houses, admire wall murals painted on the old structures, and experience the vibrant atmosphere of this historic settlement. At the entrance, there is a small temple for worship, while along the walkway, you’ll find souvenir shops, snack stalls, and drink stands offering affordable local treats. At the end of the jetty lies another temple and a wide platform that opens up to sweeping views of the sea, making it a popular spot for photography and sunset watching.
