“This monument commemorates French soldiers with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and an Eternal Flame beneath its arch.”

The Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile stands majestically at the center of Place Charles de Gaulle, the grand roundabout connecting twelve avenues including the world-famous Champs-Élysées. Commissioned by Napoleon I in 1806 after his victory at Austerlitz, it was designed by architect Jean Chalgrin and completed in 1836 as a lasting tribute to the French army.

Both the inner and outer surfaces of the arch are engraved with the names of generals and victories from the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, making it one of the most significant national monuments in France. Since its completion, it has served as the focal point for many national events, both celebratory and commemorative.

Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I, where an Eternal Flame—lit in 1923—burns continuously, rekindled every evening in a solemn ceremony to honor those who gave their lives for the nation.

Visitors can climb to the top of the monument, which houses a small museum and a panoramic terrace offering breathtaking 360-degree views of Paris, including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and La Défense. The view from the top beautifully captures the radiating avenues of the city.
