“A striking cathedral blending Gothic and Renaissance styles with a grand dome, exquisite sculptures, and stained glass — just steps from the shores of Lake Como.”
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta of Como began construction in 1396 and was completed in 1770, taking more than 370 years to finish. This cathedral clearly reflects the transition of artistic and architectural styles over centuries. Its foundations are Gothic, the interior is adorned with Renaissance frescoes, and the magnificent Baroque dome was designed by Filippo Juvarra.
Inside, the cathedral is filled with exquisite details. The main altar is intricately carved, while the large rose window casts rainbow-colored light into the nave. Statues of saints and angels display remarkable craftsmanship. The combination of art and architecture provides visitors with an inspiring experience that merges both aesthetic beauty and spiritual depth.
The Treasury Museum within the cathedral exhibits sacred artifacts, embroidered vestments, medieval manuscripts, and ancient liturgical books. These treasures reveal the city of Como's spiritual heritage and devotion. Visitors can explore the cathedral’s history and culture in depth through this collection.
During the golden hour, the front of the cathedral glows with a soft amber light, creating a breathtaking scene. This moment is perfect for photography and is highly favored by both photographers and pilgrims.
