“The white lotus-shaped ordination hall is adorned with beautiful and modern murals depicting the life of Buddha. The surrounding atmosphere is a serene and well-maintained Buddhist park, typical of a forest temple.”

Wat Santi Wanaram, also locally known as Wat Pa Dong Rai, is a prestigious forest monastery and Buddhist park situated in Phung Ngu Sub-district, Nong Han District, Udon Thani. This temple is world-renowned for its architectural masterpiece: the "Lotus-Shaped Ordination Hall" (Ubosot), the only one of its kind in Thailand. The temple was envisioned as a sanctuary of purity, leading to the construction of a magnificent white lotus structure that appears to float majestically in the center of a vast 10-rai (16,000 square meter) lake. The architecture is breathtaking, featuring 24 delicately crafted white lotus petals arranged in a blooming formation, symbolizing the enlightenment and purity of the Buddha.

As visitors walk across the bridge connecting the shore to the floating hall, they are greeted by a sense of profound serenity and cooling breezes from the surrounding water. The interior of the Ubosot is designed with high ceilings and an open-plan layout to allow for natural ventilation and a bright, airy atmosphere. At the heart of the hall sits the principal Buddha image, finished in a serene pearl-white, radiating a sense of peace and compassion. The surrounding walls are adorned with contemporary mural paintings that use modern artistic techniques to tell the life story of the Lord Buddha and his path to enlightenment, using soft color palettes that encourage meditation and contemplation.

Beyond the architectural grandeur, the temple grounds serve as a sprawling "Buddhism Park," filled with diverse flora and well-maintained green spaces. The layout reflects the disciplined lifestyle of the forest monk tradition, emphasizing simplicity and a harmonious coexistence with nature. The crystal-clear waters surrounding the lotus hall are home to thousands of fish, and visitors are welcome to participate in merit-making activities by feeding them at designated spots.

Wat Santi Wanaram is much more than just a picturesque landmark for photography; it is a spiritual hub for the people of Nong Han and pilgrims from across the globe seeking the tranquility of a forest monastery. It stands as a perfect bridge between ancient Buddhist beliefs and modern design, making it one of the most spiritually and visually significant destinations in Northeastern Thailand.
