“A peaceful forest monastery in the heart of Udon Thani, respected by disciples of Luang Pu Thir Thitthammo. The temple is distinguished by its stupa containing the Buddha’s relics, shaped like an ancient measuring vessel called Thanān.”

Wat Thipyarat Nimit, also known locally as Wat Ban Chik, is located at the southeastern corner of the intersection between Naresuan Road and Asawamit Road in Ban Lueam Subdistrict, Mueang Udon Thani District. The surrounding area is called Khum Ban Chik. This ancient temple has long played an important role in the local community and remains a sacred place where villagers regularly come to make merit, worship, and participate in Buddhist ceremonies.

The temple’s origins trace back to an area outside the old temple wall, which was once home to the local shrine and spiritual hall of Khum Ban Chik villagers. Later, Khun Mae Thip, wife of Police Lieutenant Colonel Prayong Phonphai, together with Sub-Lieutenant Khun Rat Kitbanhan and the local villagers, donated land to establish a monastery. Phra Ajahn Chot became the first abbot in 1930 (B.E. 2473). The first ordination hall (ubosot) was completed in 1936 (B.E. 2479) but was not yet consecrated with the Buddhist boundary stones (phatthasima).

In 1948 (B.E. 2491), Sub-Lieutenant Khun Rat Kitbanhan and local villagers organized the first official consecration ceremony for the ubosot, marking a significant milestone in the temple’s history and solidifying its place as a spiritual center for the community. Later, when the old ordination hall deteriorated, Luang Pu Thir Thitthammo (Phra Khru Satit Thammavisut), the abbot at that time, initiated the construction of a new hall. The new structure was completed in 1990 (B.E. 2533), with the sacred boundary stone ceremony held on April 14, 1990. This new two-story ordination hall built over water stands out for its exquisite architecture and has since become an iconic landmark of the temple.

The temple grounds are serene and shaded by large trees, providing an ideal environment for meditation and spiritual practice. The spacious area accommodates Buddhist activities and annual merit-making festivals such as Visakha Bucha Day, Makha Bucha Day, and Buddhist Lent Day, drawing many devotees from Udon Thani and nearby communities. Wat Thipyarat Nimit thus serves as both a spiritual refuge and a cultural gathering place for the people of Ban Lueam.

Wat Thipyarat Nimit is significant in both spiritual and architectural aspects. It is one of Udon Thani’s most well-known forest monasteries. The temple’s development began to flourish during the residence of Luang Pu Thir Thitthammo, who transformed it into a genuine meditation retreat. He laid the foundation for both spiritual growth and physical development of the temple, turning it into a center of faith and Dhamma practice for local devotees and those seeking mindfulness.

The new ordination hall (ubosot) is beautifully designed, combining elements of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya art styles. Inside, the principal Buddha image features a serene and compassionate expression, radiating peace and benevolence.

One of the temple’s most prominent structures is the stupa containing the Buddha’s relics, which has a distinctive Thanān (traditional measuring bowl) shape. This chedi is unique to Wat Thipyarat Nimit and serves as the focal point of faith for devotees who come to pay homage for blessings and spiritual merit.

Another remarkable structure is the Twin Giant Hall (Sala Yak Khu) — an old sermon hall guarded by two large guardian giant statues standing proudly at the entrance. According to local belief, these giants protect the Dhamma and safeguard those who come to practice meditation.

The temple compound also includes a Vihara Cloister (Viharn Khod), housing various Buddha images in different postures for worshippers to pay respect. The peaceful environment provides suitable spaces for walking meditation (jongkrom), seated contemplation, and other spiritual practices.

Wat Thipyarat Nimit thus serves not only as a place of worship but also as a destination for those who wish to follow the forest monk tradition of Northeastern Thailand. The temple represents simplicity, humility, and mindfulness — core principles of Theravāda Buddhist practice in the Isan region.
