“Step back in time to Edo-era Japan, taste Ise Udon and Akafuku Mochi, and explore unique local souvenirs.”

Okage Yokocho (Okage Yokocho) is located in front of Ise Jingu Naiku (the Inner Shrine of Ise Grand Shrine). It was created to recreate the atmosphere of Japan during the Edo to Meiji periods. With traditional wooden buildings, more than 50 local shops, and charming décor, it has become one of the most popular cultural streets in the area. Visitors can enjoy Ise’s famous foods such as Ise Udon (thick, soft noodles served with a rich soy-based sauce), Akafuku Mochi, a sweet with over 300 years of history, along with fresh seafood and local sake. In addition, the street hosts seasonal festivals, performances, and workshops that offer travelers the chance to experience authentic Japanese traditions.

Okage Yokocho is a foodie paradise, featuring local specialties unique to the Ise area:

  • Akafuku Mochi: The most famous sweet of Ise, this treat has a history of over 300 years. It consists of soft mochi (pounded rice cake) covered in a smooth, sweet red bean paste. The paste is shaped into ridges, symbolizing the currents of the nearby Isuzu River. Look for seasonal treats like Akafukugoori (matcha shaved ice) in summer and Akafukuzenzai (warm sweet bean soup) in winter.

  • Ise Udon: A regional noodle dish characterized by its exceptionally thick and soft noodles. It is served in a dark, rich broth made from tamari soy sauce and dashi (stock), which is deeply flavorful but not overly salty.

  • Tekonezushi: A regional sushi style where sliced fish (like tuna or skipjack) is marinated in a sweet soy sauce and served over seasoned sushi rice. It originated from local fishermen who prepared the meal right on the boats.

  • Butasute Croquettes: A popular street food snack from a long-established butcher shop (since 1909). These are deep-fried, crispy beef croquettes made with high-quality Japanese beef, perfect for eating on the go.

  • Ise Kadoya Beer: Stop by this local microbrewery to sample award-winning craft beer, often paired with local seasonal foods like Toba oysters.

With over 60 shops, you'll find everything from regional food products to traditional handicrafts:

  • Okage Inu Goods: Okage Inu is a legendary dog that supposedly traveled to Ise Shrine on its master's behalf during the Edo period. Look for adorable ceramic figurines and branded souvenirs featuring this lucky dog.

  • Local Soy Products: Shop for locally brewed soy sauce and visit the specialty tofu shop, which offers healthy sweets like tofu soft-serve ice cream and savory conger eel dishes.

  • Handicrafts and Cultural Items: You can find beautiful traditional items, including ceramic Maneki-neko (lucky cats) and various arts and crafts.

  • Local Tea: The area is known for its indigenous tea, offering high-quality green tea that makes an excellent gift.

Atmosphere and Activities:

  • Period Architecture: Stroll along the streets and immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere created by the beautifully preserved and reconstructed Edo and Meiji-era wooden buildings.

  • Taiko Drum Performance: Keep an eye out for performances by the Shinon Daiko group at the Taiko Yagura (Drum Tower) in the center of the district, which adds a lively cultural element to the area.

  • Okage-za Mythical Hall: Visit this unique hall to learn about the origins of Ise and the world of Japanese mythology through videos and 3D displays.
