“A sacred wooden bridge rebuilt every 20 years, symbolizing purity, renewal, and the gateway to Japan’s most important Shinto shrine.”

Uji-bashi Bridge (宇治橋) is one of the most iconic landmarks of Ise Jingu, located at the entrance of Naiku (Inner Shrine). Built entirely of Japanese cypress, the bridge stretches 101.8 meters across the Isuzu River, serving as the spiritual threshold between the everyday world and the sacred realm of the kami (gods). Visitors traditionally bow before crossing as a sign of reverence, while the act of walking across is believed to cleanse both body and spirit.

Every 20 years, as part of the Shikinen Sengu ceremony, the bridge is completely dismantled and rebuilt, continuing a ritual tradition of purity and renewal that has lasted for more than 1,300 years. Each end of the bridge features a Shinmei-style torii gate, constructed from sacred timber reused from the previous shrine buildings, giving the structure profound spiritual significance.

One of the most extraordinary phenomena occurs around the winter solstice, when the rising sun aligns perfectly with the torii gate at the bridge’s entrance, attracting pilgrims and photographers alike. Beyond the bridge lies the sacred forest of Naiku, while nearby areas such as Okage Yokocho and Oharaimachi offer a vibrant taste of Edo-period streets, local cuisine, and souvenirs.

How to Get There
  • From JR or Kintetsu Iseshi Station, take a bus bound for Naiku-mae and get off at the final stop (approx. 15–20 minutes). From there, the bridge is just a short walk to the entrance of Naiku.

Travel Tips
  • Visit in the early morning for peaceful views and fewer crowds.

  • Winter solstice sunrise is a must-see, but arrive early as it gets very crowded.

  • Combine your visit with Okage Yokocho and Oharaimachi for food and souvenirs.

  • Bow before crossing the bridge as a gesture of respect.
