“A vast, flat sandstone terrace resembling 1,000 tatami mats, offering one of the most beautiful sunset views along Wakayama’s Pacific coast.”

The plateau is composed of Neogene sandstone, relatively soft and sculpted by ocean waves and wind over millions of years. The erosion has created unique, layered formations that extend into the sea.

Name Meaning: “Senjojiki” literally means “1,000 tatami mats” — Sen (千) = thousand, Jo (畳) = tatami mat, Jiki (敷) = laid out. The name reflects the massive size of the rock terrace, roughly equivalent to 1,000 tatami mats or about 4 hectares.

Scenic Highlights:

  • Sunset Viewpoint: Senjojiki is famous for its breathtaking sunsets. From its western coast location, visitors can watch the fiery red sun slowly descend into the Pacific Ocean, creating a romantic and unforgettable view.

  • Exploration Walks: The flat surface allows visitors to walk along the terrace and experience the layers of rock extending into the ocean up close.
