“A steep sandstone cliff and historic cave that once hid the Kumano naval forces and pirates. Inside, it houses Japan’s largest bronze Benzaiten statue, a blowhole, and ancient wave erosion patterns on the ceiling.”
Sandanbeki Cliff:
Sandanbeki Cliff stretches approximately 2 kilometers along the Pacific coastline and rises 50 meters above sea level. The powerful Kuroshio Current crashes against the cliff, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring display of waves. This area was originally called Midan, meaning “viewing point,” but over time the name evolved into Sandanbeki.
Sandanbeki Cave:
Sandanbeki Cave is located beneath the cliff and can be accessed via an elevator that descends 36 meters. The cave was historically used as a hiding place for the Kumano naval forces during the Heian period and, according to legend, also served as a refuge for pirates. Inside the cave, visitors can view historical artifacts and models related to the Kumano naval forces and the activities of pirates.
