“A beautifully reconstructed Edo–Meiji era townscape with traditional wooden houses, local cuisine, and the famous Akafuku Mochi.”

Okage Yokocho ($\text{おかげ横丁}$) is a beloved historic street and commercial district located directly in front of the Naiku (Inner Shrine) of Ise Jingu in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, Japan. It’s part of the longer traditional approach street called Oharaimachi ($\text{おはらい町}$).

Historical Charm and Meaning

The area was reconstructed to recreate the picturesque townscape from the Edo to Meiji periods, a time when pilgrimages to Ise Jingu were extremely popular.

  • Meaning: The name "Okage Yokocho" means "side street of gratitude" or "side street of thanks." It reflects the tradition of warmth and hospitality that the local Ise townspeople extended to the countless pilgrims who undertook the long and difficult journey to the shrine.

  • Atmosphere: Walking through the street, with its traditional wooden buildings and stone-paved paths, feels like stepping back into 19th-century Japan.

What to See, Eat, and Do

Okage Yokocho is a vibrant hub featuring approximately 50 shops, restaurants, and cultural spots, making it a perfect place to relax after visiting the shrine.

Famous Local Cuisine

This district is famous for regional foods and snacks, many of which are perfect for eating while strolling:

  • Akafuku Mochi: This is arguably the most famous local sweet. It’s a soft rice cake (mochi) covered in a smooth, sweet strained red bean paste. The original Akafuku main store is a historic establishment located nearby in Oharaimachi.

  • Ise Udon: Thick, soft udon noodles served in a rich, dark sauce made primarily from concentrated soy sauce (tamari).

  • Tekone-zushi: A regional style of sushi where slices of bonito (skipjack tuna) or other fish marinated in soy sauce are placed over rice.

  • Butasute Croquettes: Crispy, popular fried croquettes from a famous local butcher shop.

  • Matsusaka Beef: You can try the highly-prized Matsusaka beef, often served on skewers.

Shopping and Culture

  • Shopping: The shops offer a wide range of Ise-Shima specialties, traditional crafts, local sake, and unique souvenirs. You can find items ranging from folk toys to fine textiles.

  • Okageza Shinwa-no-Yakata: This facility showcases Japanese mythology and the history of the Ise Grand Shrine using engaging exhibits and videos.

  • Performances: On weekends and holidays, you can often enjoy live cultural performances, such as traditional Taiko drum displays.

  • Maneki-neko: A large statue of the beckoning cat marks a central spot and is a favorite photo opportunity.
