Ōyunohara Ōtorii is a giant and sacred torii gate located at Ōyunohara, the original site of Kumano Hongū Taisha, one of the three main shrines along the world-famous Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route.

Originally, Kumano Hongū Taisha was built on a sandbank at the confluence of the Kumano, Otonashi, and Iwataki Rivers. In 1889, a massive flood destroyed most of the shrine buildings, prompting the relocation of the main shrine to higher ground. The original site, Ōyunohara, was preserved as a sacred area to honor the shrine’s origins.

The current giant torii gate was constructed in 2000 as a symbol of faith and grandeur. It stands 33.9 meters high and 42 meters wide, making it one of Japan’s most iconic religious landmarks. Pilgrims and visitors from around the world come to admire its impressive scale and to experience the serene sacred atmosphere.

Although the main shrine buildings have moved, Ōyunohara remains a holy ground, marked by two small stone shrines at the base of the original shrine location, commemorating this spiritual heart of Kumano.

• From Shingū Station or Kii-Tanabe Station on JR, take the Kumano Hongu Taisha bus to the “Hongu Taisha-mae” stop, then walk about 10 minutes to reach Ōyunohara Ōtorii.

• Visit in the early morning or late afternoon for the best lighting for photography.

• Late March to May offers cherry blossoms that enhance the scenery around the torii.

• Wear comfortable shoes as the area around the shrine is spacious and requires walking.

• Combine your trip with a visit to Kumano Hongū Taisha for a full pilgrimage experience.
