Toba Aquarium (Toba Suizokukan) is a large and highly regarded public aquarium located on the waterfront of Toba Bay, Mie Prefecture. It houses more than 30,000 animals from over 1,200 species across twelve zones that replicate natural environments such as coral reefs, polar seas, the Amazon River, and the local seas of Ise-Shima.

The aquarium is famous for its Dugong, the only one in Japan that can be seen in person, named Serena, which inspired mermaid legends. It also features Sea Otters, Mei-chan and Kira-chan, who are extremely popular with visitors.

There are daily Walrus and Sea Lion shows, allowing visitors to enjoy impressive performances and interactive experiences. Other rare creatures include Fishing Cats, Finless Porpoises, and a “Living Fossils” zone.

Excitingly, Toba Aquarium is the only place in the world exhibiting both a Dugong and an African Manatee together, offering visitors the chance to see rare animals and learn about diverse ecosystems.

• Approximately a 10-minute walk from JR or Kintetsu Toba Station, or via local buses from the station to the aquarium.

• Allow at least 2–3 hours to explore all zones. Arrive in the morning to catch the Walrus and Sea Lion shows.
