The Toba Castle Ruins (鳥羽城跡, Toba-jō) mark the site of a historic coastal fortress built in 1594 by Kuki Yoshitaka, a renowned naval commander during Japan’s late Sengoku period. The castle was famous for its unusual design—its main gate faced the sea, earning it the nickname “Floating Castle of Toba” (Toba-no-uki-jō). This reflected both Toba’s maritime heritage and its strategic importance during the feudal era.

Today, the former castle grounds have been transformed into Shiroyama Park, a peaceful hilltop area that retains the original stone walls, the Honmaru (main enclosure), and the Tenshu (castle keep) foundations. Informational plaques throughout the park describe the castle’s structure and historical role, helping visitors imagine its grandeur centuries ago.

From the hilltop, visitors are rewarded with sweeping views of Toba Bay, Mikimoto Pearl Island, and the charming coastal town below — a perfect blend of history, nature, and sea breeze.
