“Dragon-shaped mountain inspired by local legend Panoramic viewpoint “Heaven’s Yard” overlooking Fansipan and Sapa town Colorful flower and orchid gardens Ethnic Hmong and Dao cultural performances Best sunrise and sunset views in Sapa”
Ham Rong Mountain, literally translated as “Dragon Jaw Mountain,” is one of the most iconic landmarks of Sapa, located in Lao Cai Province in Northern Vietnam. Just a short walk from the Sapa Stone Church in the town center, the mountain rises to about 1,800 meters above sea level and offers sweeping panoramic views of Sapa town, the Fansipan range, and the surrounding mist-covered valleys.
The name “Hàm Rồng” comes from the mountain’s distinctive shape, which resembles the head of a dragon gazing toward the sky. According to local legend, two dragons once lived in this area. When a great storm came, one dragon flew to the heavens while the other remained on earth and turned into the mountain, forever looking upward in longing for its lost companion.
The hiking trail up Hàm Rồng has been carefully developed, with winding stone paths passing through colorful flower gardens and beautifully arranged orchid gardens. Along the way are scenic spots such as the “Orchid Garden,” “Cloud Yard,” and “Heaven’s Gate,” the highest viewpoint where visitors can watch the morning mist drifting among the mountains — a sight that feels almost otherworldly.
At the foot of the mountain lie villages of local ethnic minorities such as the Hmong and Dao. Visitors can enjoy traditional music and dance performances, wear traditional costumes for photos, and learn about the unique hill tribe culture that thrives harmoniously with the natural surroundings.
During the winter, Hàm Rồng Mountain is often covered in a soft mist, creating a tranquil and romantic atmosphere. It’s an ideal destination for walking, photography, and appreciating the serene beauty of Sapa from above. For many travelers, climbing Hàm Rồng is an essential part of experiencing the charm and spirit of this mountain town.
