“128-meter-high and 1,000-meter-long concrete dam Hydropower plant with 1,920 MW capacity Memorial site for workers who lost their lives during construction Panoramic viewpoints over Da River River cruises and ethnic village visits nearby”

Hoa Binh Dam stands on the Da River, about 70 kilometers from Hanoi. It was built to generate electricity, regulate river flow, and prevent flooding for northern Vietnam. The project marked a new era of reconstruction and national progress after years of conflict.

Construction began in 1979 with substantial technical and engineering assistance from the Soviet Union. Over fifteen years, thousands of workers and engineers toiled under challenging mountain conditions. Many sacrificed their lives, and a memorial now honors them on a hill overlooking the dam. The project was completed and inaugurated in 1994.

The dam measures 128 meters in height_ and over 1,000 meters in length, equipped with eight turbines producing a total output of 1,920 megawatts. Upon completion, it supplied a major portion of Vietnam’s national power and became a symbol of technological achievement and international solidarity.

Today, Hòa Bình Dam serves as both a power station and a cultural landmark. Visitors can explore the dam museum, view the massive concrete structure, and admire stunning river and mountain panoramas. The sunset over the Da River offers one of the most captivating sights in northern Vietnam.

Beyond engineering, Hòa Bình Dam embodies the spirit of resilience and unity of the Vietnamese people. The area surrounding the dam has been developed into an eco-tourism destination featuring river cruises, homestays, and visits to nearby ethnic villages that preserve their traditional way of life amid lush natural scenery.
