“Shrine of the Sea Goddess Thien Hau Intricate blend of Chinese–Vietnamese architecture Dragon and phoenix carvings on the main gate Rows of red lanterns and incense coils Iconic photo spot in Hoi An Ancient Town”

Chua Thien Hau (Cantonese Assembly Hall) is a famous Chinese temple in Hoi An Ancient Town, built in the 17th century by Cantonese Chinese immigrants who settled there for trade. The temple is dedicated to "Thiên Hậu" (The Goddess of the Sea), who is believed to protect travelers and fishermen from storms and maritime dangers.

The temple's architecture is elaborately built in authentic Chinese style, featuring curved tile roofs adorned with ceramic dragons, wooden doors intricately carved with phoenix patterns, and traditional vibrant green tiles. Inside, there is the main altar for Thiên Hậu, accompanied by offerings and red lanterns, creating a tranquil and sacred atmosphere.

In addition to its artistic beauty, the Cantonese Assembly Hall has been the spiritual heart of the Chinese community in Hoi An for centuries. It historically served as a meeting place and activity center for the Cantonese Assembly. Today, prayers and religious ceremonies are still held there on important occasions.

Upon entering the temple, visitors are greeted by the pervasive scent of incense, along with the sound of bells and chants that inspire calmness. Red lanterns, hung in a row along the rooflines, enhance the picturesque setting, especially in the evening when the soft sunlight reflects through the incense smoke.

Therefore, Chua Thien Hau is not just a sacred place, but also a symbol of friendship between the Chinese and Vietnamese people, and an important part of the cultural heritage of Hoi An Ancient Town, which has been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
