“This place is not only a cultural tourist attraction but also a real living area for local people, allowing visitors to experience the real life of the traditional community.”

Chew Jetty is one of six Chinese ports in George Town, collectively known as "Clan Jetty." These were built in the late 19th century by Hokkien Chinese immigrants who arrived to work at the port and trade with foreign countries.

The houses were originally built on stilts over the sea to facilitate the transportation of goods and boat trips. Over time, the community expanded into a small village, housing residences, shrines, shops, and private ports belonging to each of the families, including the Chew, Lim, Tan, Yew, and Ong.

Chew Jetty is the largest and most popular with tourists, as it remains the best preserved in its original state. Each wooden house is built along a long wooden bridge leading to the sea, evoking a simple and warm atmosphere of a rural seaside setting in the heart of the city.

Chew Jetty is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site within George Town's Old Town, reflecting the cultural significance of the Chinese community in Southeast Asia.

Within the community, visitors can stroll through traditional wooden houses decorated with traditional Chinese red lanterns, pay respects at a small shrine to the Chew family's ancestors, or purchase handmade souvenirs such as key chains, wooden dolls, or hand-painted postcards. There are also local food stalls selling ice-cold lemonade, local ice cream, and traditional Chinese dishes in a friendly atmosphere. At the end of the bridge, you'll find a viewpoint overlooking the open sea, offering views of fishing boats, Penang's main port, and the beautiful backdrop of Georgetown. In the evening, as the sun sets, the golden light reflecting off the water creates a warm and charming image of the old wooden houses.

Although the community is open to tourists, most residents still live in the area. Therefore, respecting privacy and maintaining order within the area is essential to ensure the community can coexist with tourism sustainably.
