“The street is famous for its murals, as well as small cafes, antique shops, galleries, and a small museum that blends Chinese, Malay, and European cultures.”

Armenian Street, the historical and cultural heart of Georgetown's UNESCO World Heritage Site, exudes a unique charm. Formerly known as "Malay Land" due to its Malay community, it was later renamed "Lebuh Armenian" after the Armenian merchants who settled there in the early 19th century. However, the Chinese merchants, who remain the mainstay of the area, truly influenced the area's growth and influence.

Impressive Architecture: The street is lined with beautifully preserved Sino-Portuguese shophouses, dating back decades to centuries. These buildings reflect the wealth of the Straits Chinese (Peranakan) past, with intricate wood carvings and lavish interiors decorated with gilded motifs. A notable example nearby is the "Penang Peranakan Mansion," which showcases the lifestyle and treasures of the Peranakan elite.

Historical Destinations: The street is also home to several historical landmarks, including the Sun Yat Sen Museum, where Dr. Sun Yat Sen planned to overthrow the Qing Dynasty in China. There's also the Kampung Golam Mosque, reflecting the influence of the area's original Malay and Muslim communities.

Social Atmosphere: Armenian Street has now become one of Penang's liveliest pedestrian streets. With souvenir shops specializing in local handicrafts and artisanal crafts, hipster cafes, art galleries, and small shops selling unique goods, it's a perfect place for a day of strolling, browsing, photographing, and shopping.

Armenian Street serves as Penang's open-air gallery, with the works of Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic serving as a major tourist attraction. His most famous work, "Little Children on a Bicycle," seamlessly blends paintings with real objects, is a highlight. In addition to paintings, wrought iron sculptures are installed on building corners throughout Georgetown. These sculptures tell stories and tidbits about the history and culture of each street, making them a fun place to explore and learn.

How to Get There

  • From Penang International Airport, it takes approximately 30 minutes by taxi or rental car.
