“Experience the unique experience of watching female sea turtles come up to lay eggs on the beach at night and also have activities to release sea turtle babies back into the wild.”

Selingan Island Turtle Park was established in 1977 to protect and conserve the declining sea turtle population in the Sulu Sea region. The park covers over 1,740 hectares and consists of three small islands: Selingan Island, Bagungan Kecil Island, and Gulisan Island. Selingan Island, the main island, is open for visitors and overnight stays.

What makes the park unique is its comprehensive sea turtle hatchery and nursery system, operated by the Sabah Department of Parks and Wildlife. From collecting eggs from the beach to hatching them in a climate-controlled environment to releasing the hatchlings back into the ocean at the appropriate time, all procedures adhere to scientific principles and sustainable conservation concepts.

Visitors staying on the island will experience the tranquility of this small island in the middle of the ocean. At night, rangers will take visitors to observe the nesting of sea turtles in a confined area to avoid disturbing their natural behavior. They also have the opportunity to participate in the "Sea Turtle Baby Release," a memorable experience that fosters conservation awareness among visitors.

The island also offers a variety of diving spots, including pristine coral reefs, home to a variety of marine fish, including parrotfish, clownfish, and other small marine life. The park also serves as a research center for marine biology, focusing on coral reef ecosystems, the life cycle of sea turtles, and the impacts of climate change. Tourism here operates under the concept of "Ecotourism with Responsibility," with a daily limit on the number of visitors. Strict regulations apply to viewing nesting sites, such as the prohibition of using flashlights, the prohibition of catching sea turtles, and the strict adherence to official instructions. This ensures that tourism activities do not harm the environment and the life cycle of sea turtles.

This park is a prime example of a blend of tourism and conservation, offering visitors the opportunity to learn, understand, and participate in the sustainable conservation of marine life.
