“A revered shrine that has been part of Phang Nga’s heritage for over a century, deeply tied to the legend of Chao Mae Sai Thong.”
The City Pillar Shrine of Phang Nga, officially known as “Phang Nga City Pillar Shrine – Chao Mae Sai Thong,” holds deep spiritual significance for the people of the province. It has long stood as a symbol of the city’s protection and prosperity. Locals and visitors alike come to pay homage, seek blessings, and strengthen their spiritual well-being.
According to legend, the shrine is dedicated to Chao Mae Sai Thong, a virtuous woman whose spirit is believed to protect the city. The tale, said to be over a hundred years old, tells of her sacrifice and devotion, which led to her veneration as a guardian deity. Over time, a shrine was built in her honor, becoming the city’s central place of worship and faith.
Architecturally, the shrine is an elegant blend of Srivijaya, Khmer, and Rattanakosin influences, giving it a distinctive southern Thai charm. The intricate carvings and serene atmosphere invite visitors to reflect and pay respect in peaceful surroundings.
