“The shrine stands out for its exquisite Srivijaya-style architecture — a quadrangular pavilion crowned with nine golden pagoda spires. Inside, the octagonal ceiling is beautifully painted with zodiac constellations surrounding the central city pillar, while the walls feature divine guardians representing the eight cardinal directions. The sacred city pillar itself is uniquely crafted from two types of wood — teak from Phrae Province and golden shower wood (Ratchaphruek) from Narathiwat — symbolizing strength, prosperity, and good fortune.”
The Narathiwat City Pillar Shrine was established to commemorate a significant milestone in the province’s history and to serve as a spiritual anchor for the community. Completed in 2023 (B.E. 2566), the shrine was graciously inaugurated by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand, marking it as one of the most sacred landmarks in southern Thailand.
Constructed entirely of carved marble, the shrine features a majestic four-gabled pavilion topped with nine pagoda spires and surrounded by covered walkways on all sides. The main entrance staircase is adorned with a granite half-moon carving of a conch shell, representing auspicious blessings.
Inside, the elaborately designed city pillar stands as a symbol of stability, harmony, and good fortune for the people of Narathiwat.
Beyond its spiritual significance, the shrine is also a cultural attraction reflecting the artistry and craftsmanship of local builders. Visitors come not only to pay their respects and make wishes for prosperity but also to admire the stunning architecture and intricate murals that adorn the interior.
