“A sacred temple believed to be the birthplace and placenta burial site of Luang Pu Thuat, home to a 500-year-old sacred Ton Liap tree.”

Wat Ton Liap is one of the most historically and spiritually significant temples in southern Thailand. According to local belief, this temple marks the birthplace of Luang Pu Thuat Yiap Nam Thale Chuet (“Luang Pu Thuat who stepped on seawater and made it fresh”). The story tells that his parents buried his placenta at the base of a massive Ton Liap tree (a species related to the Bodhi tree), giving rise to the temple’s name.

The sacred Ton Liap tree, estimated to be over 400–500 years old, is one of the largest in the region — its trunk requires about 21 people to encircle. The tree has been officially registered as a “Heritage Tree of Thailand” (Rukkha Moradok Khong Phaendin). Locals and pilgrims believe that paying respect or touching the roots of this sacred tree brings blessings, good fortune, and health.

Within the temple grounds, visitors can also find several sacred landmarks:

  • Placenta Chedi: A small pagoda built beneath the Ton Liap tree at the believed burial site of Luang Pu Thuat’s placenta.

  • Viharn of Thuat Hoo and Thuat Chan: Dedicated to Luang Pu Thuat’s parents, Mr. Hoo and Mrs. Chan.

  • Body of Luang Pu Chamniarn (Ta Luang Nian): The preserved body of the revered former abbot, still intact and enshrined for worship.

Wat Ton Liap is also known for its spiritual customs. Visitors often collect naturally fallen Ton Liap leaves that land face-up (bai liap hong) to take home as sacred tokens believed to protect from misfortune and promote healing.

Another local belief suggests that Ai Khai, the spirit child associated with Wat Chedi in Nakhon Si Thammarat, once resided here before moving to his famed temple — making Wat Ton Liap an even more mystical destination for those following southern Thailand’s sacred legends.
