“The Uttaradit City Pillar Shrine is a significant provincial project initiated with a formal blessing and foundation stone ceremony. The city pillar is made of sacred teak wood (Mahesak), the province’s symbolic tree, and the shrine’s architecture reflects the “Three Cultural Charms” of Uttaradit—Lanna, Lan Xang, and Central Thai influences.”

Uttaradit Province is an ancient city with a long and important history. However, due to several relocations of the city throughout the centuries, it had never had an official city pillar shrine. In 2010, a project was initiated to construct a new City Pillar Shrine as a unifying spiritual center for the people of Uttaradit. The initiative was led by then-Governor Mr. Winai Kruawanpat.

The construction site is located at the City Map Landmark Plaza in front of the old Provincial Hall—an auspicious location regarded as a geographic and symbolic center of the province. The design, supervised by the Fine Arts Department, integrates the artistic styles of the three major regional cultures—Lanna, Lan Xang, and Central Thai—beautifully embodying Uttaradit’s identity as the “City of Three Cultures.”

The city pillar itself is made from sacred teak wood (Mahesak), which is both a symbol of prosperity and the provincial tree of Uttaradit. It stands 108 inches above the ground, with a lotus-bud finial crafted from Chaiyaphruek wood and a base carved from Payung wood. The interior of the pillar contains a chamber to enshrine the province’s astrological chart, in accordance with ancient beliefs that it brings stability and blessings to the land.

Before construction began, a grand blessing ceremony and Buddhist chanting were held to pay respect to local deities and ancestors, with simultaneous ceremonies conducted across all districts of the province. This was done to unify the faith of the people. The project is scheduled for completion and official consecration in August 2026, marking the 111th anniversary of the city’s name change from “Phichai” to “Uttaradit” during the reign of King Rama VI.

Upon completion, the Uttaradit City Pillar Shrine will not only serve as a spiritual center but will also stand as a symbol of stability, prosperity, and unity for the people of Uttaradit—echoing the ancient belief that “when the city pillar stands firm, the city shall flourish.”
