“Elegant Jaturomuk-style shrine, sacred teak city pillar with gold lacquer, symbol of “Three Cultures City” identity, and a auspicious city landmark located at the urban planning cornerstone”

Uttaradit City Pillar Shrine is the spiritual and cultural center of Uttaradit Province, located at the urban planning landmark area in front of the old Provincial Hall on Prachanimit Road, Tha It Subdistrict, Mueang District. This site is considered an auspicious geographical point and symbolic center of the city, serving as the starting place for blessings and spiritual respect.

Uttaradit is an ancient city with a long historical background. In the past, the city location was moved several times, resulting in the absence of an official city pillar shrine. In 2010, a project was initiated by Governor Winai Kruwanphanit to establish a proper City Pillar Shrine as a unifying spiritual center for the people and a symbolic foundation of the city.

The architectural design was inspired by the region’s cultural diversity, blending Lanna, Lan Chang, and Central Thai art styles, forming the identity of the “Three Cultures City”. The shrine features a Jaturomuk (four-faced) pavilion with a multi-tiered spire, decorated with intricate Thai stucco and traditional motifs.

The city pillar itself is made of sacred teak wood (Makha Mongkhon), standing 108 inches high. The top is carved from Chaiphruek wood in a lotus bud form, while the base uses Payoong wood. Inside the pillar is a cavity containing the city’s horoscope inscription, according to ancient astrological beliefs, symbolizing protection and stability for the city.

The shrine is also an important venue for state ceremonies, religious rituals, and provincial cultural events, such as City Foundation Day and Songkran Festival. Ceremonies are often conducted with participation from all districts to unite collective faith. A major consecration ceremony is scheduled for August 2026, marking the 111th anniversary of the renaming from “Phichai” to “Uttaradit.”

Today, the shrine is not only a sacred site but also a major landmark and spiritual tourism destination. Visitors often come to pray for stability in life, career success, and safe journeys before continuing to other attractions in the province.

With its sacred significance, refined architecture, and deep-rooted beliefs, the Uttaradit City Pillar Shrine stands as a symbol of stability, prosperity, and unity, reflecting the belief that “when the city pillar is strong, the city flourishes.”
