“The shrine features elegant Thai mandap architecture. The city pillar is made of Chaiyaphruek wood with a four-faced Brahma at the top and houses a royal hair relic.”

The Samut Songkhram City Pillar Shrine symbolizes stability and prosperity for the province. It was constructed following royal traditions and has received high royal patronage.

Construction began in 1974 (some sources mention 1972), with the foundation-laying ceremony held on August 9, 1982. The shrine is located in front of the provincial hall, a highly auspicious site for a city pillar.

Designed by the Handicraft Division of the Fine Arts Department, the building is a Thai mandap-style pavilion with four open sides and a two-tiered roof. The central spire is decorated with traditional Thai floral patterns. The walls are made of brick and plaster, painted in gold for a majestic appearance.

The city pillar is made of Chaiyaphruek wood, a sacred type of wood according to Thai tradition. It has a round shape, with a lotus petal base. The top of the pillar is carved into a lotus flower, containing a golden container that holds the royal hair relic of King Rama IX. The pinnacle features a beautifully carved four-faced Brahma.

The shrine is a highly respected place for local people and officials who visit for blessings and good fortune when assuming new positions.

It also serves as a venue for important provincial ceremonies, including the city celebration, Brahma worship rituals, and annual processions of the city pillar deity, fostering unity and pride among the residents of Samut Songkhram.
