“The shrine is the only one in Thailand with three city pillars, blending Thai, Chinese, and Lao architectural styles in the historic Baan Sing Tha area.”

Yasothon City Pillar Shrine is not only a sacred place but also an important cultural heritage that deeply reflects the roots, beliefs, and ethnic diversity of Yasothon. It serves as a spiritual center for local people from the past to the present, as well as a site for rituals and a symbol of the city itself. The shrine is especially unique for having three city pillars, a rare feature in Thailand. The central pillar represents the main city pillar, symbolizing the core power and stability of the city. The left and right pillars are believed to be the resting places of Phra La Ngum and Phra La Ngam, ancestral spirits according to traditional Isan–Lao beliefs. These spirits are believed to protect the city, prevent disasters, and maintain peace and order. This reflects the ancient concept that “a city is protected by guardian spirits,” where spiritual beliefs are closely tied to the foundation of the community.

In terms of architecture, the shrine shows a remarkable blend of cultural influences. It features strong Chinese elements such as intricate wall paintings with Chinese motifs, a pair of large guardian dragons at the entrance, and an altar dedicated to the Heavenly and Earthly deities. At the same time, Thai architectural elements are clearly visible in its gabled roof decorated with chofa, bai raka, and hang hong ornaments. On the top, a stupa-like structure reflects Lao artistic influence, symbolizing historical connections with the Lan Xang kingdom. This makes the shrine a unique cultural fusion of Chinese, Thai, and Lao traditions.

The shrine is located in Ban Singha Tha old town, a historic community filled with a mix of wooden heritage houses, European colonial-style buildings, Thai architecture, and Chinese commercial influences. As a result, the shrine is not an isolated religious site but the heart of a culturally rich heritage district.Every year, the City Pillar Shrine Festival is held around late November. The event includes sacred ceremonies, offerings, processions, traditional Chinese opera performances, and local entertainment. It also features the ritual bathing of the city pillar during the fifth lunar month, which is an important local tradition symbolizing prosperity and blessings for the city.Overall, Yasothon City Pillar Shrine is more than a religious landmark. It is the spiritual core of the community, a symbol of urban stability, and a living reflection of Yasothon’s long-standing history, culture, and belief system that continues to thrive today.
