“See semi-wild orangutans during twice-daily feeding sessions Learn about one of Borneo’s pioneering wildlife rehabilitation projects Explore lush rainforest home to birds, squirrels, and reptiles Convenient half-day trip from Kuching Educational experience for nature and wildlife lovers”
Semenggoh Wildlife Centre Founded in 1975 by the Sarawak Forestry Department, the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre was established at a time when illegal wildlife trade and deforestation were major threats in Borneo. The centre serves as a sanctuary and rehabilitation facility for injured, orphaned, or rescued wildlife, especially orangutans.
Its main mission is to rehabilitate orangutans and help them return to the wild in a semi-wild environment. The 740-hectare reserve provides rich rainforest habitat where rehabilitated orangutans can learn natural survival skills. Although the main rehabilitation program has since moved to the Matang Wildlife Centre, Semenggoh remains home to over 20 semi-wild orangutans.
The centre’s feeding sessions, held twice daily, give visitors the chance to observe orangutans up close as they receive supplementary food. These sessions not only offer a memorable wildlife encounter but also promote education and awareness about conservation efforts in Borneo.
Over the decades, Semenggoh has become a model for successful wildlife conservation, known for its orangutan rehabilitation program, semi-wild management, and educational outreach. It also collaborates with researchers and conservationists to study animal behavior and health, supporting long-term preservation of Borneo’s ecosystems.
Beyond orangutans, the surrounding rainforest is home to diverse wildlife, including numerous bird species, giant squirrels, monkeys, and reptiles — providing visitors a glimpse into Borneo’s vibrant tropical ecosystem.
