“The Perhentian Islands, off Terengganu’s coast, offer white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and world-class snorkeling and diving with sea turtles and reef sharks. Comprising Perhentian Besar and Kecil, the islands are best visited from March to October and accessible by speedboat from Kuala Besut.”

Perhentian Islands (Pulau Perhentian) Located off the coast of Besut in Terengganu, the Perhentian Islands are an archipelago of nine islands, though the most visited are the two main ones: Perhentian Besar (“Big Perhentian”) and Perhentian Kecil (“Small Perhentian”). The name Perhentian means “stopping point” in Malay, historically a rest-stop for sailors.

These islands offer pristine beaches with powder-white sand that meet translucent, turquoise seas. The marine environment is rich and diverse: coral reefs surround the islands, providing habitat for sea turtles, reef sharks, clownfish and many others. On land, you’ll find tropical jungle, hiking trails connecting secluded bays and beaches, and a relaxed island lifestyle.

Water-based activities dominate the visitor experience: snorkeling right off the beach is possible at many resorts, diving schools operate throughout the archipelago, and kayaking or paddleboarding provide alternatives for those less inclined to dive deep. Getting there involves taking a speedboat from Kuala Besut jetty; the ride takes around 30-45 minutes depending on conditions.

However, it’s important to note the seasonal nature of the islands: from November to February the northeast monsoon brings rough seas and many resorts close. The best time to visit is from March to October when weather and water conditions are at their best.

How to Get There
  • Travel to Kuala Besut (jetty) via bus, car or from airports at Kota Bharu or Kuala Terengganu.

  • From Kuala Besut jetty take a speedboat to the islands (approx 30-45 minutes) between 08:00 and 17:00 depending on operator and weather.

Travel Tips
  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent and water-proof bags for valuables.

  • Choose accommodations early in the season; budget or luxury options exist on both islands.

  • Avoid the monsoon months (Nov–Feb) unless you’re prepared for limited services and rough seas.

  • Respect the marine park rules: no stepping on corals, no feeding marine life, and pay the conservation fee.

Admission Fee

  • Marine park conservation fee applies (rates vary) – ask your resort or boat operator.

Opening Hours

  • The islands themselves are accessible year-round, but many services (boats, resorts) are limited or closed during the monsoon season (November-February).
