“Recognized as the world's largest free-flight aviary, spanning 20.9 acres. Visitors can observe over 3,000 birds in an environment that closely mimics their natural habitat, featuring the iconic Hornbill Park (Zone 3) and a dramatic 30-foot Waterfall Aviary.”
Kuala Lumpur Bird Park opened in 1991 and is one of the most prominent natural attractions in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. It is widely known as the world's largest free-flight bird park, covering over 20.9 acres (8.5 hectares) and nestled within the Perdana Botanical Gardens, a massive green area in the city. The park is home to over 3,000 birds from more than 200 species, including endemic birds found exclusively in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, making it a vital nature education resource for both locals and international tourists.
The park’s key feature is its Free-flight concept, allowing birds to fly, forage, and breed freely within a gigantic netting structure that closely approximates their natural habitat. Visitors can walk along the pathways and observe the birds up close in a natural setting. The entire area is divided into four main zones: Zones 1 and 2 are the largest free-flight zones, teeming with water birds like flamingos, pelicans, and Milky Storks, and featuring the highlight Waterfall Aviary with a 30-foot backdrop. Zone 3, or Hornbill Park, is dedicated to large hornbills, especially the Rhinoceros Hornbill, a symbol of Malaysia. Tourists can stand close to and photograph the hornbills, making this zone popular among general visitors and professional photographers. Zone 4 features smaller aviaries, special care areas, and the famous World of Parrots, showcasing colorful parrots and flightless birds like ostriches.
The overall atmosphere of the KL Bird Park is that of a lush tropical rainforest, rich with greenery, birdsong, and surrounding nature. Highlight activities for visitors include the scheduled Bird Feeding Sessions and the Daily Bird Show at the Amphitheatre, both included in the admission fee. These activities help foster a close understanding of bird behavior and add fun for all ages.
