“It is an important habitat for critically endangered Bornean orangutans and offers the opportunity to cruise on wooden boats deep into the forest to observe wildlife up close.”
Tanjung Puting National Park on the Indonesian island of Borneo is one of the world's most critical sites for the conservation of the Orangutan, an intelligent and beloved mammal. It encompasses several ecosystem types, from dryland rainforests to peat swamp forests and coastal mangroves, making it a diverse habitat for countless creatures.
A major feature of the park is its orangutan rehabilitation centers, such as Camp Leakey, Pondok Tanggui, and Tanjung Harapan, where orphaned or rescued orangutans are cared for before being released back into the wild. Cruising by Klotok (a traditional wooden house boat) along the Sekonyer River is a profoundly unique experience, allowing you to witness the tranquil rainforest scenery and possibly spot proboscis monkeys, crocodiles, and various bird species.
The best time to visit is during the dry season approximately May to September, which offers less rain and smoother travel. The atmosphere on a Klotok cruise at night can provide an impressive experience as you witness thousands of fireflies lighting up the riverbanks. Most trips are 3 days and 2 nights, allowing for a full immersion into nature.
This location is a paradise for photographers and nature lovers, offering opportunities to capture orangutans in their natural setting and the stunning views of the dark-water river cutting through the green forest. It is an experience that feels both adventurous and serene, perfect for those seeking to disconnect from the outside world and connect with wildlife. Come and experience the wonder of the Borneo rainforest and witness the invaluable conservation efforts for the orangutans at Tanjung Puting National Park.
