“Banyuwangi serves as the perfect starting point for a variety of nature adventures. Visitors can hike to witness the mesmerizing blue flames at Ijen Volcano and explore the enchanting De Djawatan forest, which feels like a scene from a fairy tale. Wildlife enthusiasts can observe animals roaming the savanna at Baluran National Park, while those interested in marine life can watch sea turtles laying eggs on Sukamade Beach.”

Banyuwangi is a port city and administrative district located at the easternmost tip of Java Island, Indonesia. The city is nicknamed the "Sunrise of Java" because it is the first place on the island to greet the morning sun. It also serves as a major gateway connecting Java and Bali via the Gilimanuk ferry port. Banyuwangi is well-known as the most convenient starting point for trips to the world-famous Ijen Crater.

The natural significance of Banyuwangi comes from its diverse landscapes. The city is home to three national parks: Alas Purwo National Park, featuring beautiful beaches and protected forests; Baluran National Park, with its savanna fields and often called the "Africa of Java"; and, of course, the Ijen Volcano. Additionally, Banyuwangi preserves the Osing culture, an indigenous ethnic group that maintains its traditional customs and language, with distinctive folk performances such as the Gandrung dance.

Most tourists use Banyuwangi as a base for nighttime adventures to Ijen, where popular activities include hiking to witness the blue flames and sunrise. During the day, visitors can relax at Red Island Beach, known for its surf-friendly waves, or explore the quiet Watu Dodol Beach, adorned with large coastal rocks. The overall atmosphere of the city is friendly and welcoming, making travel convenient and enjoyable.

By combining the thrill of volcanic adventures with the tranquility of its beaches, Banyuwangi attracts adventure seekers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts alike. Its easy access from Bali via ferry also makes it an excellent choice to enhance your travel experience in Indonesia. If you are looking for a destination that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, away from the hustle of big cities, Banyuwangi is a destination you should not miss.

How to Get There
  • Plane: Fly directly to Blimbingsari Airport, which has connections from major cities like Surabaya and Jakarta.
  • Train: Take the train from Surabaya or other cities in Java to Banyuwangi Station. The Blambangan Ekspres route has currently been extended to connect directly to Jakarta.
  • Ferry: Travel by car or bus from Bali to Gilimanuk Port and take the ferry to Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi, with the crossing taking approximately 45–60 minutes.

Travel Tips
  • Best Season to Visit: The ideal time to visit is from April to October, the dry season, which offers the best weather for outdoor activities, especially climbing Ijen Volcano and going on a safari in Baluran. It is advisable to avoid December to March, the rainy season.
  • Preparing for Ijen: If planning a trip to Ijen Volcano, bring a gas mask and a headlamp, as these are not always available for rent. Due to the high concentration of sulfur gas, it is recommended to book a guided tour in advance and carry a health certificate.
  • Transportation and Booking:  Most major attractions are quite remote. The most convenient way to travel is to hire a car with a driver for the day or book a local tour company in advance. Public transportation between the parks is limited and not very convenient.
  • Recommended Accommodation: For early-morning trips to Ijen, consider staying in nearby towns such as Licin or Gladi. Alternatively, staying in Banyuwangi city near Ketapang Port is convenient for onward travel to Bali.
  • Wildlife Viewing: When visiting Baluran or Alas Purwo National Parks, it is best to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to maximize chances of spotting wildlife such as banteng (wild cattle) and various bird species. Always follow the park staff’s guidance strictly for safety.
