“Alor Island is globally renowned for its spectacular diving sites Muck Diving and Wall Diving with high biodiversity, and it is a melting pot of at least 15 distinct ethnic groups, each with different languages and cultures, particularly the Kabola tribe.”

Alor Island is the largest island in the Alor Archipelago and serves as the administrative center of the Alor Regency in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The island is often hailed as one of the best diving destinations in the world, thanks to its vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life from tiny critters to large pelagic species carried by the island’s unique strong currents. The main town, Kalabahi, functions as the economic and tourism hub of the island.

What makes Alor truly special is its rich cultural and linguistic diversity. It is home to numerous ethnic groups, including the Kabola tribe and other indigenous communities, who continue to preserve the traditional art of weaving Ikat textiles, known for their intricate patterns and deep cultural meaning. The locals also use ancient bronze drums called “Moko” in various rituals symbols of social status and valuable items often exchanged as dowries during marriage ceremonies.

Most visitors come to Alor for diving and snorkeling, with famous dive sites such as The Arch and Shark Point. The best time to visit is between April and December, when the sea is calm and clear. On land, travelers can explore Takpala Village, a traditional mountain settlement featuring pyramid-shaped houses and cultural rituals passed down through generations. The island’s peaceful atmosphere and simple lifestyle make it feel like an undiscovered treasure.

Alor is a paradise for divers and anthropologists fascinated by indigenous tribal culture, as well as for underwater photographers seeking to capture the beauty of the deep. It’s also ideal for those wishing to escape mainstream tourist destinations and experience the authenticity of island life — one that lives in perfect balance with both the sea and the land. Alor is a magnificent blend of untouched natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, waiting to be explored.
