“The only protected area in the world to incorporate a continuous, intact transect from a snow-capped mountain peak and glaciers down to a tropical marine environment, including extensive wetlands and rainforests.”

Lorentz National Park The Crown Jewel of Biodiversity Lorentz National Park covers a massive 25,056 square kilometers and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. The core significance of this area lies in its complete and pristine ecosystem, stretching from the Arafura Sea coastline up to Puncak Jaya, which is the highest peak in Oceania and Australasia and still maintains tropical glaciers. This unique elevation gradient creates a multitude of habitats.

Unique Natural and Cultural Significance The Park is home to an extraordinary level of biodiversity, hosting an estimated 60% of plant species found on the island of New Guinea and over 630 species of birds, including the spectacular Birds of Paradise, and over 123 mammal species. It is vital for biological evolution research due to its relative isolation. Furthermore, it is the traditional land of several distinct indigenous groups who maintain ancient lifestyles that are intrinsically linked to the forest ecosystem.

An Adventurous and Challenging Visitor Experience A trip to Lorentz is a genuine expedition, focusing on challenging adventure and exploration. Most visitors aim for multi-day treks and cultural encounters with indigenous communities. The terrain is exceptionally rugged, requiring extensive preparation and high fitness levels. The atmosphere is one of immense solitude and the raw power of nature, offering a true sense of discovery for those who venture into its depths

A Sanctuary for Explorers and Ecologists Lorentz National Park primarily attracts researchers, scientists, and serious adventurers. Photography here focuses on the breathtaking natural landscapes—cloud-covered rainforests, towering peaks—and the unique indigenous cultures. It is not a destination for mass tourism but is highly rewarding for those with an explorer's spirit and a deep interest in ecology and anthropology. We invite you to experience one of the planet's last, great, and largely unexplored wildernesses.

How to Get There
  • By Air (Starting Points): Fly to Timika Airport (TIM) or Wamena Airport (WMX), which serve as the main access points for different areas of the park.

  • Main Transportation: Access to the deep interior of the park is extremely difficult and is primarily done via chartered small aircraft to remote airstrips or multi-day treks through challenging terrain.

  • Arrangements: Visiting requires mandatory contact with local guides and park authorities to obtain permits and arrange logistics and safety, as it is a highly remote area.

Travel Tips
  • Best Time to Visit: The drier months, generally April to November, offer slightly better trekking conditions, but weather in Papua is highly unpredictable year-round.

  • Footwear and Gear: You must bring durable, fully waterproof hiking gear, warm clothing for high altitudes, and necessary medical supplies/insect repellents.

  • Photography and Etiquette: Focus on landscape photography; taking pictures of indigenous people must be done with utmost respect and explicit permission.

  • Food and Culture: Be prepared for simple, self-sufficient meals and a lack of modern amenities. Patience and respect for local traditional laws and customs are crucial.

  • Planning: Allow extensive time for planning to secure necessary permits and coordinate logistics due to the area's remoteness and complexity.

Admission Fee:

  • Foreign visitors: Adult approximately 150,000 IDR, Child approximately 75,000 IDR (please note that this is only the basic park entrance fee and does not include guide or transportation costs, which can be significantly higher)

Opening Hours:

  • General Daily Hours: 08:00 AM – 04:00 PM (for administrative points)

  • Special Note: Backcountry trekking and expeditions, once approved, may continue 24 hours a day according to the authorized itinerary.
