The National Monument (Monumen Nasional), or MONAS, was erected to commemorate the courage and perseverance of the Indonesian people in their fight for independence from the Netherlands. Construction began in 1960 and it was officially opened to the public in 1975. The monument stands 132 meters tall, a prominent marble column that dominates the city center. A distinctive feature of MONAS is the Flame of Independence situated at the very top of the tower, which is coated with 50 kilograms of pure gold.
